South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
Client:
Dunn + Kiley were hired by OZ Architecture and Xanterra Lodging to design site and landscape plans for the new Maswik Lodge complex of four new hotel buildings set onto the site of a previous motel complex. Working within the Grand Canyon South Rim development zone the design required approval by the National Parks Service as well as the developer and operator. Utilizing all local and native materials the site and landscape are designed to recreate the natural setting. The existing site was heavily forested with mature evergreens the layout of the proposed hotel preserves large stands of the trees to create overhead canopies of pinyon pines. The design responds to the architecture, creating a series of outdoor rooms and courtyards where the hotel residents are able to interact with the native landscapes.
